CAREER COUNSELING
“Even the longest lives can be short. It is our work that lasts longer.”
Rose Wilder Lane
Is your work meaningful and fulfilling? Do you love going to work every day? As certainly as the sun rises, problems will happen at work, causing us to lose sight of our direction and meaning.
Every day work problems can leave you wondering what has happened in your life and questioning if you are in the right job.
Unfortunately, society hasn’t programmed people to think about getting help with their careers beyond choosing a career in college. But most people can benefit from collaboration that comes from seeking help to develop their career and solve work problems!
MEET JOE
Joe came to counseling because of changes in his organization. Like most organizations, Joe’s company was under budget constraints, requiring him to pick up additional job duties of eliminated positions. Consequently, Joe was struggling with dissatisfaction with the organization, stress management, work-life balance issues, and time-management concerns.
Joe’s therapist helped him work through the initial conversations about how he wanted to leave the organization and helped him begin exploring different ways of approaching the problems.
Because of counseling, Joe was able to take the emotion out of the situation and make a rational decision about whether he wanted to stay with the company. Due to his years of seniority and possible opportunities for advancement, Joe decided to stay.
The first step was to begin working on his ability to dialogue with his supervisor about his specific challenges in his position. Additionally, Joe refined his time-management skills also in collaboration with his therapist and supervisor.
By the time Joe completed counseling, he had learned many new stress-management techniques and felt like his work-life balance was much better. In the end, Joe was more fulfilled, feeling better about his commitment to the organization, his ability to face global challenges, and managing his career from a more rational perspective.
